A silk travel set for long-haul comfort | designed and developed in Hanoi, Vietnam.
This travel kit combines handcrafted production with purposeful functionality, created to make economy flights feel more exclusive.
During this project, I learned how to design a complete travel experience through textiles and collaborated closely with a silk shop owner in Hanoi, Vietnam. The goal was to create a multifunctional kit suitable for long flights. Due to the spontaneous and fast-paced nature of the project, all decisions—from material selection to pattern development, were made directly in the workshop, where we spent a full day producing the final pieces together.
The design was inspired by the unique qualities of silk itself. Its softness, elegance, and adaptability made it the perfect material for a compact travel set that enhances comfort without adding bulk. Early sketches and paper patterns helped shape the garments, ensuring they could be layered over existing clothes or worn on their own—ideal for temperature changes during long flights.
The travel kit consists of:
A lightweight silk outfit, easy to put on over your regular clothes.
A padded silk sleep mask with additional support around the nose to block out light.
A multifunctional pillowcase sized for airplane pillows. It can be secured to the seat and also serves as the kit’s packaging. Beyond flights, it can be used on car headrests or other travel pillows.
The day spent in the workshop was essential. Working hands-on with the producer made it possible to adapt the designs quickly and test proportions in real time. Despite the spontaneity and time pressure, everything came together smoothly.
I was able to use the silk travel kit on my flight back to Sweden, and it genuinely transformed the experience. The outfit kept an ideal temperature throughout the 14-hour journey, the pillowcase felt luxuriously soft compared to the standard airline pillow, and the entire kit felt like a small, personal upgrade to the flight.
